or remember that time all those fans said it was wrong to have angel coulby play the role of gwen in merlin because it wasn’t era-appropriate. because, ya know, being era-appropriate in a made-up story about magic is srs bsns.

so that’s why i don’t give a shit if you think i’m “overreacting” about jj abrams having a white actor play khan noonien singh. i’m not that surprised by it, since actors of color are routinely dismissed, but i still reserve the right to be pissed.

This makes me sad. I have seen lots of movies where characters that were traditionally colored were played by white people. It’s extremely common for “white-washing” to happen, and no one ever seems to have a problem. The moment someone of color plays a character who is white, they throw a fit.

I got into an argument with a friend about Merlin because she didn’t like that Gwen was black as she was supposed to be “traditionally beautiful,” which involved pale skin and fair features. I told her that I found Gwen beautiful anyway, and didn’t see the problem. She bitched it wasn’t “era appropriate ” I told her to shut up and understand that this was a good step in the right direction for ending racism.

Idk. Double standards are everywhere.

The difference between this and POC getting upset about white washing is because how often do people cast color blind? How many roles are written featuring positive POC characters? We don’t have much in the media(positive), can we at least have the roles written “for us”
